“What was already an invaluable resource is further improved with the updated second edition. Beck describes the nuts and bolts of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) and brings therapeutic processes and techniques to life through session narratives and case examples. New to this edition is a 'What if…' feature that offers valuable answers to common clinical questions, which extend beyond the basics. This text is essential reading for individuals learning CBT and a key reference for more seasoned therapists. It should be on the bookshelf of every mental health professional and used in every graduate course on CBT.”--David J. A. Dozois, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Western Ontario, Canada“The practicality of Beck's revised therapy guide is just plain impressive. Here are the building blocks of excellent cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), taught with wonderful skill and sensitivity in a manner that engages new learners and experienced clinicians equally. This is an outstanding basic text for training mental health clinicians of all disciplines, and is especially useful for courses on general psychotherapy, CBT, or adult psychiatric problems. Numerous case illustrations clarify both the principles and practice of CBT; the extended example helps newcomers understand how to use specific methods over the entire course of treatment. It is hard to imagine that any aspiring clinician would not benefit greatly from reading this book.”--Gail Steketee, PhD, MSW, Dean and Professor, School of Social Work, Boston University “In addition to the fundamental aspects of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) that were presented in the original volume, the second edition presents innovations in theory and clinical practice. Like its predecessor, this book is destined to be an international success. It is written in clear and compelling prose, with many practical suggestions and clinical vignettes. This is truly an essential book for anyone who wants to become expert in CBT.”--Keith S. Dobson, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Calgary, Canada “CBT sometimes appears ‘deceptively simple,’ as the author notes, but a range of skills are required to deliver this form of treatment in a competent and ethical manner. Beck elegantly presents these skills in this readable, appealing book. She not only describes CBT techniques, but also applies them in an in-depth case example that makes the elements of treatment come alive. Students often remark that they need to be given an example showing how something is done before they can grasp it. Beck accomplishes that in a way that I think will build the practitioner’s confidence and mastery. This book has already begun to influence my teaching, and I plan to use it as a required text in my introductory practice course.”--Michael Paul Melendez, PhD, LICSW, Simmons College School of Social Work “When this book was originally published, it represented a tremendous advance in the teaching and dissemination of CBT. Now Beck has truly retooled and improved the original. Beginning therapists will appreciate the step-by-step approach to the patient that Beck, a master teacher and clinician, presents with such clarity and with detailed rationales and session transcripts. This second edition is a classic made better for anyone interested in teaching or learning CBT.”--Donna M. Sudak, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Senior Associate Training Director, and Director of Psychotherapy Training, Drexel University College of Medicine “According to the many clinical psychology students I have helped train, this has been far and away the single most useful book they have read in their careers. The fundamentals of CBT are presented comprehensively, yet in crystal-clear fashion, with straightforward prose, a wealth of sample dialogues, helpful diagrams, and informative tables. New material on behavioral activation, homework, the therapeutic relationship, and more makes a terrific book even better. This is a text that deserves to be read—and reread—from cover to cover, whether you are a student learning CBT for the first time or an experienced clinician.”--Evan M. Forman, PhD, Director, PhD Program in Clinical Psychology, Drexel University “This book is a treasure. It is an excellent practical reference that covers all aspects of cognitive behavior therapy. The second edition incorporates much new material arising from the last two decades of research and practice, exemplifying the scientist-practitioner approach. The reference list is greatly enlarged, and new material is provided on cognitive behavioral approaches to various diagnostic groups, the incorporation of ‘third-wave’ strategies like mindfulness and acceptance, and the crucial importance of the therapeutic alliance and collaborative case conceptualization. This volume will be referred to again and again, by clinicians at every level.”--Ann Hackmann, DClinPsych, University of Oxford Department of Psychiatry, Warneford Hospital, Oxford, United Kingdom “Anyone who wants to find out about cognitive behavior therapy and how to apply it in practice need look no further. The second edition of Beck’s excellent, bestselling book provides an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to delivering the various elements of CBT. The book offers a comprehensive introduction for those new to CBT, with illustrative case examples throughout; it is also an essential resource for experienced cognitive therapists who want to brush up on their knowledge and skills. It should definitely be a core text in every CBT training program.”--Alison Brabban, DClinPsych, Durham University, United Kingdom “I am a true fan (and 16-year adopter) of this text. Instructors, students, and clinicians have been eagerly awaiting an updated version of Beck’s classic guide to CBT and this second edition should exceed their lofty expectations. It retains the clarity, accessibility, thoughtful sequencing, and practical relevance of the original, while enhancing coverage of critical content pertaining to assessment, case conceptualization, core techniques, and the therapeutic relationship. Attentive to both the art and science of CBT, this volume is a ‘must read’ for graduate students and clinicians who are looking to build or sharpen their CBT skills.”--Drew Erhardt, PhD, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Pepperdine University “This book is well suited for teaching the basics of cognitive therapy to students new to the field, or for providing a detailed review for more seasoned professionals in your classroom. Clinicians trained in other modalities will learn ways to use cognitive techniques to help clients explore how their thoughts, emotional reactions and behaviors are related—and to facilitate change and growth. This is an essential text for cognitive therapy courses.”--Mark McGrosky, MSW, LCSW, doctoral candidate and adjunct lecturer, Silver School of Social Work, New York University (on the first edition) “I have used Judith Beck’s book for my advanced direct practice course since 1999. I have reviewed many textbooks over the years, but always return to this one as my basic text. The price is reasonable for my students and the concepts are easy to understand, with highlighted summaries and dialogues illustrating the execution of interventions. The second edition is even better, with the addition of chapters on evaluation and behavioral activation. My students consistently give feedback that the text delivers the fundamentals of CBT in an effective, insightful, and pragmatic format.”--Lynn Coghill, MSW, LCSW, MSW Program Director, School of Social Work, University of Pittsburgh “When I want students to learn how to conduct cognitive therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy: Basics and Beyond is the first book I assign. Before I assigned this book for the first time, I reread it to make certain it was as useful as I remembered. It was—and to my surprise, I even found that many of what I had come to think of as my own special insights in training supervisees were actually right there on the page. When students have mastered this text, Judith Beck’s Cognitive Therapy for Challenging Problems is a natural (and useful) next step.”--Thomas L. Rodebaugh, PhD, Department of Psychology, Washington University in St. Louis (on the first edition) “This excellent introduction to CBT offers enough detail to give students the ability to begin to practice, and is sufficiently broad to allow students to apply CBT across a range of client problems. It also makes an excellent addition to a new therapist’s library, serving as a reference for years after graduate school.”--R. Lyle Cooper, PhD, LCSW, College of Social Work, University of Tennessee (on the first edition) “The text offers clear guidance on how to structure sessions and how to conceptualize clients using the cognitive model. The case interwoven throughout the text helps students see the process in action. I have used this book for several semesters with graduate students who find it helpful in expanding their understanding of CBT and developing their clinical skills.”--Michael Likier, PhD, Adjunct Professor, Department of Professional Psychology and Family Therapy, Seton Hall University (on the first edition) “This book has served as the fundamental text for my graduate psychology course on empirically supported interventions for adults for many years. Beck’s clear and crisp writing style, use of multiple case examples, and inclusion of helpful handouts and worksheets make this text a ‘must have’ for any teacher who would like to provide students with a solid grounding in cognitive therapy.”--Jennifer S. Kirby, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (on the first edition)Judith S. Beck, PhD, is President of the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy (www.beckinstitute.org), which provides state-of-the-art training in CBT and offers online courses on a variety of CBT topics, including Essentials of CBT: The Beck Approach. She is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She has written nearly 100 articles and chapters as well as several books for professionals and consumers; has made hundreds of presentations, nationally and internationally, on topics related to CBT; and is the codeveloper of the Beck Youth Inventories and the Personality Belief Questionnaire. Dr. Beck is a founding fellow and past president of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy.

The leading text for students and practicing therapists who want to learn the fundamentals of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), this book is eminently practical and authoritative. In a highly accessible, step-by-step style, master clinician Judith S. Beck demonstrates how to engage patients, develop a sound case conceptualization, plan treatment, and structure sessions effectively. Core cognitive, behavioral, and experiential techniques are explicated and strategies are presented for troubleshooting difficulties and preventing relapse. An extended case example and many vignettes and transcripts illustrate CBT in action. Reproducible clinical tools can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.

Good book This book is great. It provides a step by step guide on using CBT in therapy. There are activity sheets and dialogues showing how to use CBT with clients. Some of the examples may be a bit unrealistic as there is little conflict potrayed. This book is also easy to read and comprehend which is great when one has a lot to read for class.Fantastic read. Pivotal insight. Fantastic read. This is the fundamental authority in the realm of CT. For adept readers looking for insights of CBT, this is a great tool. I would suggest pairing this book with individual studies and meta-analyses of CT's effectiveness in different mental health realms. Top university clinical programs in mental health research and instruction utilize this book. Judith's father Aaron still teaches at Penn. GO QUAKERS!and provides the perfect balance of theory and practice I had the basic understanding of CBT, with my grounding in Person-Centered and Adlerian theories. This book provided the necessary "training" that I needed to enhance my knowledge of CBT. It is written for a clinician, and provides the perfect balance of theory and practice, even offering a workbook-type feel. Using one client's experience throughout the book was a great move. I enjoyed reading this book and use it as a reference in my practice..

Brain on Fire Free Pdf

ISBN: B009VSFJ6C
Title: Brain on Fire Pdf My Month of Madness

In 2009, Susannah Cahalan woke up in a strange hospital room strapped to a bed, under guard, and unable to move or speak. Her medical records - from a month-long hospital stay of which she had no memory - reported psychosis, violence, and dangerous instability. Yet, only weeks earlier she had been a healthy, ambitious twenty-four-year-old, six months into her first serious relationship and a sparkling career as a cub reporter.

Susannah's astonishing memoir chronicles the swift path of her illness and the lucky, last-minute intervention led by one of the few doctors capable of saving her life. Weeks ticked by and Susannah moved inexplicably from violence to catatonia. Over one million dollars worth of blood tests and brain scans revealed nothing. The exhausted doctors were ready to commit her to the psychiatric ward, until the celebrated neurologist, Dr. Souhel Najjar, joined her team. With the use of a simple - yet ingenious - test, he was able to make a lifesaving diagnosis - revealing a newly discovered autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks the brain.

With sharp reporting drawn from hospital records, scientific research, and interviews with doctors and family, Brain on Fire is a crackling mystery and an unflinching, gripping personal story that marks the debut of an extraordinary writer.

"Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness" should be ... "Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness" should be required reading for everyone in the health care profession- especially neurologists. This past April, 2017, my 18 year old granddaughter, Alysa, after having had seizures, spent 2 weeks in the hospital; MRI's, CT-scans, EEGs and blood work came back normal. Slowly, she became unable to read, to eat, to speak. Slowly, she "descended into madness", becoming violent and hallucinating. In the very beginning of her illness, my daughter-in-law, Gretchen, through research, texted me to have the doctors consider "anti-NMDA receptor autoimmune encephalitis". At the same time, my sister-in-law, Downey, wrote to tell me of this book. Nope. None of the doctors at the first hospital had a clue about it. On April 14th, Alysa was transported to Chapel Hill, NC Neuroscience Hospital. (I requested the information about the anti NMDA receptor autoimmune encephalitis be forwarded with her records) One month before Alysa's illness, a young woman was the first to be diagnosed with this disease at Chapel Hill. Working with The Mayo Clinic, doctors at CH acquired an infusion- which almost immediately reversed Alysa's psychotic symptoms! She is still recovering and will need more infusions and therapy. Susannah's book has not only given us insight into what was a horrific nightmare for our family, it has also validated getting a second (third or fourth) opinion when a patient's condition is not improving. Thank you, Susannah! I hope you have made a complete recovery by now. This book lead to my sons diagnoisis I will be forever grateful to Susannah Cahalan for writing this book. It was brought to my attention by a friend and reading it was what lead us to a diagnosis of Autoimmune Encephalitis for my son. This neurological disease has only been identified in the past twelve years and is not widely understood. It is often misdiagnosed as mental illness due to the neuro-psychotic nature of some of the symptoms. The six months proceeding my son's diagnosis were their own kind of hell, and I am not being mellow dramatic when I say that in writing this book, Susannah gave my son his life back. Without it I have no doubt that he would have been institutionalized. If you have any interest in the brain, medicine, or just enjoy a good medical drama please read this book. Not only is it a gripping medical story, but it raises awareness of an obscure and difficult to diagnose neurological disease. We need all the help we can get to raise awareness of Autoimmune Encephalitis and reading this book is a great place to start. Thank you from the mother of an Autoimmune Encephalitis warrior

The Kindness of Strangers (New York Review Books Classics) Free Pdf

ISBN: 1681372746
Title: The Kindness of Strangers (New York Review Books Classics) Pdf
Author: Salka Viertel
Published Date: 2019-01-22
Page: 352

“Thank goodness Greta Garbo encouraged her confidante Salka Viertel to write. With cameos by Kafka, Sarah Bernhardt, Eisenstein, Isherwood, and many others, Viertel’s memoir is humane, lightly ironic, and dizzyingly entertaining. It’s a portrait of two lost worlds—the pre-Hitler German-speaking stage and the pre-CGI Hollywood—as well as the story of an actress and screenwriter who all her life was bold in love and passionate for the arts.” —Caleb Crain“Salka ends her book with a phrase about her ‘incorrigible heart.’ It is this quality which sustains and ennobles all the artistic, intellectual, social and political events which her book narrates. It gives us a sense of what it is to be a true person. Without that core of warm humanity all the rest would be vanity.” —Harold Clurman, The Nation “From early childhood in the Polish Ukrainian sector of Austria-Hungary through her experiences in the German theater and Hollywood, Mrs. Viertel shares a full life, candidly and rewardingly.”—Kirkus Reviews“Salka is forgotten today. Biographies have been written about her ‘genius’ husband Berthold, but Salka appears only as footnote in works about Greta Garbo. She deserves better, and her extraordinary story should to be read today by anyone interested in the German exile experience.”—Dialog International Salka Viertel (1889-1978) was born Salomea Sara Steuermann in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In the late 1920s, Salka and her husband, Berthold Viertel, left Berlin for Hollywood, where Berthold wrote screenplays and directed films and Salka began acting in motion pictures. There, she befriended Greta Garbo on the set of Anna Christie and co-wrote screenplays for many films. During World War II, the Viertels started a salon in their home for other émigrés. In 1942, Salka was put on an FBI watch list and later her salon was dissolved under the inquisition of the Hollywood film industry. After the war, she returned to Europe where she lived until the end of her life.Lawrence Weschler, the grandson of the eminent Viennese-born Weimar-era emigre (and Hollywood) composer Ernst Toch, has written several celebrated works of of literary nonfiction, including Vermeer in Bosnia, Mr. Wilson’s Cabinet of Wonder, and Seeing is Forgetting the Name of the Thing of One Sees. He was a staff writer at The New Yorker for over twenty years and is a contributing editor to McSweeney’s, The Threepenny Review, and The Virginia Quarterly Review. The recipient of a Lannan Literary Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism, he recently retired as director of the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University. He is currently completing a biographical memoir of Oliver Sacks.

A memoir about showbiz in the early 20th century that travels from the theaters of Vienna, Prague, and Berlin, to Hollywood during the golden age, complete with encounters with Franz Kafka, Albert Einstein, and Greta Garbo along the way.

Salka Viertel’s autobiography tells of a brilliant, creative, and well-connected woman’s pilgrimage through the darkest years of the twentieth century, a journey that would take her from a remote province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Hollywood. The Kindness of Strangers is, to quote the New Yorker writer S. N. Behrman, “a very rich book. It provides a panorama of the dissolving civilizations of the twentieth century. In all of them the author lived at the apex of their culture and artistic aristocracies. Her childhood . . . is an entrancing idyll. In Berlin, in Prague, in Vienna, there appears Karl Kraus, Kafka, Rilke, Robert Musil, Schoenberg, Einstein, Alban Berg. There is the suffering and disruption of the First World War and the suffering and agony after it, which is described with such intimacy and vividness that you endure these terrible years with the author. Then comes the migration to Hollywood, where Salka’s house on Mabery Road becomes a kind of Pantheon for the gathered artists, musicians, and writers. It seems to me that no one has ever described Hollywood and the life of writers there with such verve.”

Family plot Salka Viertel, an obviously kind, generous. warm woman, published her memoir in 1969, and the description is far more interesting than the soap opera she tells, which is mostly (for the first 100 pages) family history and then life as a screenwriter for Garbo, who became an intimate pal in Hollywood....meantime, she's bringing up 3 sons, financially supporting her husband Berthold, supporting relatives in Europe (as Hitler comes to power) and reporting for work at MGM. European refugees flock to her home in Santa Monica: Thomas Mann, Brecht, Schoenberg, Max Reinhardt, and so on. These are all cameos, just a running list. She suffers an excess of anxieties as she gets family out of Europe (they all waited til the last minute), and by the end of the 40s, she faces the blacklist for seeming to support Commie causes. Sturm und drang nonstop. We learn a little about being a contract studio writer, but nothing about Garbo (Wikipedia says they may have been lovers), or anyone else. Mogul LB Mayer is never mentioned. She isnt dissy; despite her long lamentation, she has only kind words for everyone named. All in all, it's like a "disaster pic" : who will live, who will die; which marriage will last, which will end in divorce; whose career will blossom or burn out. The answers are neither surprising nor memorable.
