Few creatures of horror have seized readers' imaginations and held them for so long as the anguished monster of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The story of Victor Frankenstein's terrible creation and the havoc it caused has enthralled generations of readers and inspired countless writers of horror and suspense. Considering the novel's enduring success, it is remarkable that it began merely as a whim of Lord Byron's.
"We will each write a story," Byron announced to his next-door neighbors, Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin and her lover Percy Bysshe Shelley. The friends were summering on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland in 1816, Shelley still unknown as a poet and Byron writing the third canto of Childe Harold. When continued rains kept them confined indoors, all agreed to Byron's proposal.
The illustrious poets failed to complete their ghost stories, but Mary Shelley rose supremely to the challenge. With Frankenstein, she succeeded admirably in the task she set for herself: to create a story that, in her own words, "would speak to the mysterious fears of our nature and awaken thrilling horror -- one to make the reader dread to look round, to curdle the blood, and quicken the beatings of the heart."

This was supposed to be the original 1818 version of ... This was supposed to be the original 1818 version of the book, but it isn’t. It’s a bizarre copy - there are no publishing notes at all. It’s missing the Preface. I compared the first few chapters to an online version of the 1818 book and I noticed differences in Letter 3 where a whole paragraph was added. I would need to check the 1831 version to see if that is what this book is. I should return it but it was $4 and not worth the effort.Worst translation to an e-book that I've read Do not buy this (October 22, 2017) Kindle edition of Frankenstein. The book is riddled with typographic errors and the wording is off in many places. Some sentences don't flow or even make sense. It appears a bad OCR tool was used to translate the original Frankenstein novel to this bastardization. I had to put down the book since it was simply unreadable. As an alternative, I downloaded the open source version (legally free) from Gutenberg here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/84. I'm now reading and enjoying Frankenstein on its 200th anniversary.Can they be Saved? A young governess is hired to care for a young girl named Flora and her brother, Miles. Over time, the governess who is the narrator along with the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose believe that the children are in contact and being controlled by the evil Peter Quint, a former resident and Miss Jessel, their former governess. The children have a sweet demeanor but at times their cunning ways are apparent. Will they be successful in extricating the children from these dark forces? A Year Under Sharia Law is written as a travel memoir with vignettes of daily life and interactions with the community at large. It was also written to shine a spotlight on the plight of impoverished ladies who come to Saudi Arabia in the hopes of earning a salary to send money back to their family. They find work as nannies and house maids primarily. These ladies are often stripped of their rights in a patriarchy that makes them prime targets for unspeakable abuses. Their passports are held by their Saudi employees and they essentially become prisoners. This memoir is not only dedicated to them and their plight but also the tireless and dangerous work done by journalists who are critical of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. Some have paid the ultimate price.  

Interesting memoir Just finished it. Very interesting story. Kept my attention to make it a short read. I feel like this topic is very relatable to the millinieal generation trying to find jobs following the Great Recession. This book had short snappy stories within that were engaging and informative about the culture. The ending is quite suspenseful. I would recommend to anyone interested in different cultures and human rights records.Captivating Read My intention was to start A Year Under Sharia Law and read one chapter (due to a busy day). However, reading one chapter turned into finishing the book in one sitting. I couldn't put the book down it was so captivating! The authors descriptive and relatable writing style kept me engaged the whole time. I appreciate the opening chapters and how relatable it is as we all try to figure out our place in the world while accumulating debt, and how each step of the way is preparing us for something bigger. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a glimpse into the world of Saudi Arabia and the struggles Alex and Liz Fletcher had to overcome.An Inside View I have been curious about what Saudi Arabia is really like since I have been teaching English to students from there for five years now. I was excited to get this book and I could not put it down! The writers write in such a way that you feel like you are there! It was eye opening, exciting, fascinating and, at times, shocking! I appreciated the authors' stated goal in the Prologue to be as objective as possible. The authors were incredibly honest and genuine when discussing their own ideas and reactions. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more about the world and other cultures and also to anyone who is looking for an exciting read!

FUN FUN FUN This is super fun! I have been reviewing colored pencils, so it only seemed appropriate to buy myself a coloring book. All of the ones I had seen in the stores were not only expensive, but had all kinds of swirly flowers and intricate designs and themes to them. It made my head hurt. His world came crashing down thanks to some bad decisions and an encounter with a female informant that turned deadly. The how and why of what happened between Mark Putman and his informant, Susan Smith, is detailed in this excellent work of nonfiction.Author Joe Sharkey methodically lays out the events leading up to the encounter that costs Susan Smith her life. The early chapters detail the different worlds of Mark and the people of rural Kentucky where Mark gets his first assignment as a special agent for the FBI. Things heat up both figuratively and literally once Mark gives in to Susan's sexual advances.Mark is married with two children. His few encounters with Susan in a car in the Kentucky hills have dire consequences. Susan claims to be pregnant with Mark's child. She sees Mark as her ticket out of Pikeville. She threatens to ruin his career if he doesn't leave his wife. There is a fight between the two. That physical struggle ends with Susan dead from strangulation. The moral decisions faced by Mark before and after his crime are what make this such a fascinating story.Mark knows that the right thing to do is to confess and face the consequences of his actions. But he doesn't do that. Instead, he decides to cover up the crime and lay low as the investigation into Susan's disappearance begins. The author sums up Mark's dilemma with the following: "The impulse to confess was crushing, yet the need to go on was overpowering." It is during this period, after the crime but before he ultimately confesses, that the story is the most compelling.Excellent Excellent true crime book. I think this is a must read for anyone who likes to read true crime. One of the best ever written!! Didn't want it to end.ONE OF VERY BEST TRUE CRIME READS--EVER ABOVE SUSPICION by Joe Sharkey is one of the best true crime reads--ever.Admittedly, the first 20 percent of the book includes a lot of character background and geographical information, which could erroneously lead a reader to think "ho hum." Yet it's interesting data, and the reader learns a lot about the people involved, the history of the area and insight into the age old feud between the Hatfields and McCoys.Once the storyline fully kicks in at this point of the book, it quickly becomes a read difficult to put down.Initially only having general knowledge of the book, I was surprised to find that the storyline is one I never could have anticipated. Nor could I have conceived of experiencing the degree of empathy I have for everyone involved in this tale.For the first time in my life, I found myself greatly moved with compassion for the perpetrator of the crime, FBI Special Agent Mark Putnam.If the FBI ever wanted to set an agent up to fail, the scenario Putnam is placed into is a prototype. With only 16 weeks of basic training, he is given what is considered to be a "hardship assignment" in the wilds of Eastern Kentucky, better known as "hillbilly country."Navigating the socioeconomic, political, and demographical climate of the area is stressful and demanding. Although Putnam is an idealistic, gung ho, capable rookie, he is without benefit of adequate supervision and support.Add to the mix a strange, unorthodox agent in the two person office who's been moved there as a form of addressing performance issues. Couple that with having a wife and young child who are also isolated and struggling. Then stir in a young, female paid informant who develops a crush on Putnam, and it's a recipe for disaster. What a devastating tale for everyone involved.Once again, Sharkey has picked a unique topic in the true crime genre and done a superb job.
